Aussie lifesavers watching over you!

As I turned to leave Scarborough Beach on Tuesday I spotted something new since I'd last been. A sculpture by father and son Tony & Ben Jones called Watch Over You.. 'two bronze surf lifesavers casting a watchful eye over the ocean' the sculpture also recognizes the 'continuing importance of surf lifesaving to the local culture and identity of Scarborough'. While Googling I found an article about what inspires Tony and the diverse materials he uses in his work.. if you enjoy trying to figure out how the artistic mind works as much as I do, you'll enjoy the read. Happy Thursday, take care..p.s. the lifesaver's swimming cossies sure have changed a lot since then :)

  2. What a perfect place for them! We have a Lewis and Clark statue here on the Mississippi (though their expedition really started on the Missouri River!)--every spring when the floods come, all that's visible of the statue is one hand holding a hat, sticking up out of the water!

  4. Love the sculptures. I must say your Scarborough beach is quite different that ours here in England. Really like the look of yours. Great shots.

I had fun looking at what you have been up to over the last week. I had an almost computer free week...weird feeling :). So doing quite a bit of catching up now.

  7. He could have made them out of wood and anchored them out in the surf where they would have bobbed 24/7 as an action tribute.

  8. These sculptures scare me! Have you ever walked at night and bumped into one of these things?! I don't know how many times I've almost gone to the bathroom in my pants. Scary! There is a town near where I work and they have them everywhere! It's great the message behind them.....but like clowns, these sculptures give me the willies!:)

  9. A suitable tribute to these brave people, Grace!
The blue dress in the window has a great pattern of bright red cherries all over it! I have to go and check it out.

  10. Those really are beautiful sculptures. I'd say that father and son team are very talented. I was studying their faces and I think they look like brother and sister. I was reading the article about the unveiling of the sculpture and I stuck on the mayor of Stirling's name, Giovanni Italiano. I thought, that can't be right but I Googled it and it is. An amazing name. It doesn't get much more Italian than that name.

  12. Your Scarborough beach is certainly different from ours, too, as well as the one in England for which it was named! The statues are really nice. Off to read about the sculptors now.

  13. These are terrific, Grace. I have said it before, but I will repeat it: Perth's focus on public art really impresses me. It livens up the area and provides objects to inspire and entertain. Bravo, Perth.

  17. The change in the swimming costumes from then to now is considerable. A sign of changing at attitudes and modesty.

  19. Very well done, very cool, great find, Grace! One always tends to forget about heros like that when not needed (lucky me never needed help so far).
